Abstract: Low Impact Development and Vertical City
Day 1 at 10:00
The Vertical City concept is not only a possible solution of sustainable living, it is also a likely option for low impact development, which is a heated topic in today's China.
To lower the impact of urban development, we can learn from one of China's ancient concepts: Tian Ren He Yi (unity of people and nature). On one hand, we put the development of human society in the center; on the other hand, we focus on the harmony of the eco system. The two should be balanced instead of conflicted.
An "all-in-one" vertical city provides its residents both working and living spaces, largely reduces the need of automobiles, and cuts down environmental impacts. Vertical cities may help us eventually build Ebenezer Howard's "Garden City".
To exam the feasibility of building a vertical city, we need to look into modern technology, urban management, economy and other fields. Vertical city may just be the long-sought solution to low impact development.
